Bengals quarterback Joe Burrow, the top pick in the NFL draft last spring, was carted off the field after suffering left knee injury in Landover, Md.
It was immediately apparent that the injury would end his rookie season and Burrow acknowledged as much on social media before the game was over.
“Thanks for all the love,” he tweeted, joking, “Can’t get rid of me that easy. See ya next year.”
Burrow was hurt in the third quarter of the game against the Washington Football Team when it appeared that a player was blocked into him while his weight was planted on his left leg. His teammates and Washington players, including his former Ohio State teammate Chase Young and other former Buckeyes, came over to him as he was placed on the cart and taken into the locker room. He was almost immediately ruled out of the game.
CBS chose not to show replays of the injury, which occurred with the Bengals trailing, 14-9.
Protection has been an issue all season, with Burrow taking a number of hits. Last week, he was limping noticeably after a hit by the Steelers.
“You don’t want your quarterback to get hit as much as he has,” Bengals offensive coordinator Brian Callahan said in September. “Some of those are on protection, just pure pass protection. Some of those are on him and the style of his play.»
