What this means for the Bucks
Eric Nehm, Bucks beat writer: The Bucks are going for it. After falling short in consecutive postseasons, the Bucks needed to make a move to get over the hump and attempt to convince back-to-back NBA MVP Giannis Antetokounmpo to sign his supermax extension this offseason. Bucks general manager Jon Horst used significant draft assets, but he got a deal done. As one of the league’s best defenders at the point of attack and a legitimate playmaker on offense, the Bucks have added a two-way star to the roster that posted the best regular-season record each of the last two seasons.
What this means for the Pelicans
William Guillory, Pelicans beat writer: For the second straight offseason, the Pelicans find themselves trading a franchise pillar as they move into the next phase of their rebuild. But they didn’t do it without getting significant compensation in return. By trading Holiday, New Orleans adds two veteran pieces to their backcourt along with immense draft compensation that rivals what they received in the Anthony Davis trade. Holiday gets his wish to be moved to a title contender, and the Pelicans add to their war chest of assets as the construction of a new foundation around Zion Williamson continues.
How does the money change for the Bucks and Pelicans?
Danny Leroux, salary cap analyst: Another huge trade for a variety of reasons, one of which focuses on contracts. Holiday will make $26.2 million this season then has a $26.9 million player option he is expected to decline to become an unrestricted free agent, assuming full health. He should get a significant contract in Milwaukee or elsewhere next summer, unless he and the Bucks agree to an extension before then. The teams are sending about even salaries for this season since Bledsoe and Hill combine to make about the same amount but Bledsoe will make $16.9 million in 2021-22 before a partial guarantee the next season while Hill will either get $10 million or $1.3 million to walk away.
That means the Bucks have a lot more on the line next offseason if Giannis Antetokounmpo does not sign his Designated Veteran extension this November, while the Pelicans appear more committed to staying over the cap in 2021.
