The first 18 holes at the 2020 U.S. Open played as easy as Winged Foot will allow them to the rest of the week. Round 2 on Friday is expected to include gusty winds, cold temperatures and firmer greens than we saw on the opening day. Hopefully you enjoyed all that scoring over the first 18 holes because you probably are not going to see much of it the rest of the way.
What you are going to see Friday is the best golfers in the world duking it out to keep their heads above level par. Matthew Wolff and Thomas Pieters will go early after tremendous first rounds in which they both shot 4 under. Leader Justin Thomas (-5) will go late, as will Patrick Reed (-4) and Rory McIlroy (-3). We’ll watch them battle each other and — maybe more pertinently — a golf course that’s going to put up a massive fight over the next three days. We’ll also see whether Tiger Woods (+3), Dustin Johnson (+3) and Jordan Spieth (+3) can fight to make the cut on Friday at the first of six majors on the season.
