Iowa surpasses 225,000 positive COVID-19 cases, 130,000 recoveries

The Iowa Department of Public Health reported 2,239 new COVID-19 cases and 11 additional deaths in the state Saturday.As of 10 a.m., the health department reported 225,783 total positive cases, 130,007 total recoveries and 2,360 total deaths since the beginning of the pandemic. The state reported 223,544 total cases and 2,349 total deaths the previous day.Health department data show 1,203,496 Iowans have been tested for coronavirus. The state received 4,834 individual lab test results in the previous day, with 928 positive cases. Iowa receives results from prior days that add to the overall total. The state’s 14-day positivity rate continues to decline at 17.7%, down from 18.7% the previous day. Of Iowa’s 99 counties, 84 report a 14-day positivity rate at 15% or higher. That’s down from 85 the previous day. Schools within those counties can apply for a waiver to provide 100% virtual learning. Lyon and Humboldt counties report a rate greater than 30%, while Clarke and Poweshiek report a rate lower than 10%.The number of Iowans hospitalized with COVID-19 continues to slowly decline. The state reports 1,221 hospitalized with the virus, down from 1,226 a day earlier. There were 127 patients admitted in the last 24 hours, down from 183 the previous day. There are 244 patients listed in intensive care, a decline of 12 from the previous day. The state reports 146 patients on ventilators, an increase of five over the previous day.Iowa reports approximately 3,380 inpatient beds, 375 ICU beds and 843 ventilators available. Hospitalization analysis shows 910 patients were hospitalized with a primary COVID-19 diagnosis, while 311 were hospitalized for another reason but tested positive for the virus. State data shows 73% of those hospitalized are 60 or older.IDPH reports COVID-19 outbreaks in 153 long-term care facilities, an increase of two over the previous day. There are 4,744 positive cases and 1,958 recoveries reported within those facilities.
