Trump thanks lawmaker considering challenge to electoral college results

Trump took to Twitter twice on Thursday to offer thanks to Rep. Mo Brooks (Ala.), among the Republican lawmakers considering a challenge to the electoral college votes when Congress officially certifies Biden’s victory early next year.
“Thank you to Representative Mo Brooks!” Trump said in one of the tweets.
The plan, however, has yet to draw any sign of support from Republican senators, which would be needed for it to succeed.
Under federal law, Congress will meet Jan. 6 in a joint session to accept the votes of the electoral college, which formally votes Dec. 14. Any lawmaker can join with a companion from the other chamber to raise an objection to any state’s votes, prompting a debate and votes in each chamber on whether to accept the challenge.
On Wednesday, several key Republican senators dismissed the possibility that the Senate would reject electoral votes or even join a House member’s challenge.
“I haven’t heard anybody in the Senate talking about that,” said Sen. John Barrasso (Wyo.), the No. 3 Republican leader.
Asked about the possibility of a Senate challenge, Senate Majority Whip John Thune (R-S.D.) said to a Politico reporter: “I can’t imagine that would ever happen.”
Responding to Trump’s tweets on Thursday, Brooks said it was “my pleasure” to be aiding the president’s efforts to reverse the election results.
